Day of the Dead Doll

from $150.00

13” tall X 3.5” wide

The appendages and head are urethane resin, cast from original sculpts, and sewn to a cloth body. Each face is carefully painted using acrylic paint. The body is handsewn and filled using 100% cotton and marigolds. This gives these smaller dolls a 'rag doll' aesthetic.

I design and sew the outfits. No patterns are used.

Her hair is 100% black angora mohair, decorated with artificial orange flowers. It is not dyed but it is a little hard to tame. You may find she sheds, which is normal. So do we.

Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is a holiday originating in South America, held on November 1 and 2. This multi-day event celebrates friends and family who have died. The festivities include building home altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using Calaveras, Aztec marigolds and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. Families and friends bring gifts and decorations to the gravesites to make sure the spirit’s pathway home is paved with their favorite things.

My Day of the Dead dolls are inspired by the custom, particularly for children, who costume in white clothing with red sashes and skeleton face paint to represent the ghosts of children that have passed.

Each Day of the Dead doll is filled with dried Marigolds, that have been revered for centuries as the flower of the dead and it’s bright color can comfort those who are grieving. These flowers are thought to attract souls of the dead to offerings. It is also believed the bright petals with a strong scent can guide the souls from cemeteries to their family homes.
