Artist's Statement: The Gothic Lolita
Gothic Lollita is a fashion subculture
in Japan that stems from the Harajuku District. This district
is a gathering place for the youth culture to convene, peacock
for one another, and express themselves through dress and style.
The popular 'Gothic Lolita' look
is rampant with teddy bears, frills, petticoats, bonnets, and
ribbons. The color palette is either pastel or a black and white
combination. Their look is best described as "deliberately cute
to the point of being childish."
Teens will experiment and express
themselves through any means possible in order to individuate
from their parents but the Lolita seems to reach towards adulthood
by trying to become the very dolls her childhood bedroom was
filled with. I was fascinated by the girls' preoccupation and
objectification of their own childishness. Their effort to look
like a caricature of a Victorian porcelain doll piqued this
doll maker's interest. By exploring their subculture I wanted
to take those little girls who mimic their dolls and make dolls
that mimic those little girls.
